Understanding SI Joint Dysfunction

SI joint dysfunction is a common but often overlooked source of lower back and pelvic pain—accounting for an estimated 15–30% of chronic low back pain cases.1 SI joint pain is the result of ineffective load or force transfer between the spine and the pelvis. Its symptoms often mimic other spine conditions, leading to delayed diagnosis, delayed treatment, and potentially reduced mobility.

Symptoms

  • Lower back pain
  • Sensation of lower extremity: pain, numbness tingling, weakness
  • Pelvis / buttock pain
  • Hip / groin pain
  • Feeling of legs instability (Buckling, giving way)
  • Disturbed sleep patterns (unable to sit for long periods, on one side)
  • pain going from siting to standing
